Volker Peckhaus “Was George Boole Really the ‘Father’ of Modern Logic ?”

It is astonishing to see how little knowledge of logic the Gottingen mathematicians had when they started their own research on logic in 1905. I'm sure that Hilbert knew Frege's logic, but that he did not take it seriously because of notational reasons. Paradigm logic for Hilbert and his collaborators was the algebra of logic of the Boolean, Ernst Schroder. Ernst Zermelo, e.g., used a mixture of Schroder's and Peano's notation for his famous axiomatization of set-theory in 1908*1.

Despite these peculiarities[= that Hilbert and his circle took a long time to obtain the necessary competence in logic to master their programme], the institutionalization of symbolic logic in Germany began in Gottingen but proceeded very slowly. The first official lectureship for ‘Mathematical Logic and Related Fields’ was granted to Ernst Zermelo in 1908, and it was not before 1943 that the first German chair for Mathematical Logic and Foundations was created in Munster on the initiative of Heinrich Scholz. Only then was the German process of the emergence of symbolic logic as a scientific discopline of its own completed. The modern distinction between certain currents or traditions in the history of logic played no significant role in the processes just described. In 1908. e.g., David Hilbert, in his application for granting the lectureship of mathematical logic to Ernst Zermelo, used in one breath the terms ‘logical calculus’, ‘algebra of logic’, and ‘mathematical logic’ synonymously, and mentioned as representative Russell, Whitehead, Frege, Schroder, Peirce and Venn*5.
