11月6日付け日記の終わりでも少し触れた‘algebraic logic’と‘algebra of logic’という言葉に違いについて最近知ったので記録しておく。

のp.365の脚注によると、以下のようである。
The specific phrase algebraic logic originated with Halmos in his 1956 expository paper The basic concepts of algebraic logic (American Mathematical Monthly 56 (1956), pp. 363-387), however the term algebra of logic had already been used by Schroder in 1895 (see Maddux's paper [in this volume]). Halmos intended algebraic logic to refer specifically to the algebraization of first-order predicate logic, but it has come to mean the whole body in logic in which algebraic methods are dominant.
そうなんだ。あまりこの2つの言葉を区別せずに考えていたが、一応別々のもののようですね。1847年にBooleのMathematical Analysis of Logicが出ているので、この後、Booleを含め、PeirceやSchroderや、そしてLowenheim、Skolem辺りまでの動きは‘algebra of logic’と呼ばれ、この動きの延長線上に続くTarski辺りから現代まではおそらく‘algebraic logic’と呼ばれるのがよいのでしょうか？ しかしそうすると多分Tarski辺りで何か大きな地殻変動が起こったから呼び方が変わってきたのだろうし、そうだとすると何がきっかけで大きな地殻変動が起こったのだろう？ そしてその地殻変動そのものはどんなものだったのだろう？ これはTarski辺りで何か大きなことが起こったということを前提とする疑問ですが…。
