Booleの偉大さを証明するために、彼に比肩しうる偉大さを持ったRussellの次のようなBooleに関する言葉が引かれることがある。
[P]ure mathematics was discovered by Boole, in a work which he called The Laws of Thought (1854)*1.
例えばE.T. Bellのよく知られた数学者列伝の本のBooleの章でも引用されていたと記憶している。しかしRussellのこの発言に対しては慎重に解するべきとするW. Knealeの見解もある。それは次のごとくである。
Like many other good epigrams, this is a gross exaggeration*2
確かにRussellの上記の発言を文脈を無視して解するならば、大げさに感じられる。しかしどうやら実際には‘pure mathematics was discovered by Boole’という言葉によってRussellは‘Mathematical logic was discovered by Boole’と言いたかったようである*3。
Russellの件の発言は、Knealeのたしなめ以外にも、恐らくであるが幾人かの人々に誤解や反発を招いていたようである。私自身も「もう少し慎重で正確な言い方はできないものか？」とRussell発言に対し違和感を覚えるが*4、大変面白いことにRussell自身も自分の例の発言について、多分誤解や反発を招いていると感じていたらしく、昨日入手文献としてこの日記に記載した彼の手紙に以下のような文言を見つける。その手紙は大変短いものなので、本文をすべて以下に掲示してみる。
I am sorry not to have answered your letter sooner, and I am also sorry that I cannot come to Dublin for the Boole centenary. The remark that you quote from me to the effect that pure mathematics was discovered by Boole was of course not intended to be taken literally, but only as an emphatic statement of the importance of the subject which he inaugurated. This subject has now grown to vast proportions and has developed in directions that would have surprised Boole, but the developments have made his importance continually more evident*5.
Booleを讃えるため、Russellの件の発言を引用するのはよいが、無用な誤解を与えぬようなされねばならないのかもしれない。
