昨日のRussell発言について、今日小さな情報を得る。RussellはかつてBooleを褒めたたえて次のように言った。
[P]ure mathematics was discovered by Boole, in a work which he called The Laws of Thought (1854)
またこの発言に対し、以下のようにも手紙で述べている。
… The remark that you quote from me to the effect that pure mathematics was discovered by Boole was of course not intended to be taken literally, but only as an emphatic statement of the importance of the subject which he inaugurated. …
そして今日入手した、上記に掲示していないEwaldさんによるBooleの解説を読んでいると、次のようなコメントがあった。
Russell's essay[which contains the Russell's exaggerated statement about Boole] as written for a populoar audience, and (as he notes) for an editor who asked him to make the essay ‘as romantic as possible’*1.
これはEwaldさんによる文だと思われる。なるほどね。どおりで大げさなわけだ。
PS.本日以下の英英辞典を買う。Pocket版。向こうの英英辞典Pocket版は、日本のポケット・サイズの英英辞典と違って、石ころみたいにごついやつが多く、紙質も悪くて大抵使う気になれない。手に持ったときの感覚は圧倒的に日本製の方が上である。現在入手可能な日本製英英辞典ポケット版は一つだけだと思われる*2。それは『旺文社ショーター英英辞典』で大変小さいが、私には持った感覚や印刷の感じがあまり好きではない。だから他に何かよいポケット・サイズの英英辞典はないものかと探していたところ、今日以下を見つけて購入したというわけである。

サイズや形も日本のポケット英英辞典に近い。比較的スマート。しかも2003年刊行と割と新しい。若干語彙数が物足りないが、まあ向こうのポケット英英辞典の中では異例なほどスマートなのでよいとしよう。結構うれしい。これで出かけた先で英語論文拾い読みしよう。ちなみに向こうの英英辞典には、やたら似たようなのがいっぱいあるのでISBNを記しておくと、0-19-431589-4です。
