Memo: Mass Termsの特徴について

上記イェスペルセン本の質量語のsectionから、mass terms, mass wordsの特徴を以下に箇条書きする*1
ちなみに‘mass words’という言葉が使われ出したのは、どうやらこのイェスペルセン本が最初らしい*2

    • Mass termsのいみするものは、物質的か非物質的かのどちらかである。
    • 物質の場合の例。silver, quicksilver, water, butter, gas, air.
    • 非物質の場合の例。leisure, music, traffic, success, tact, common sense, satisfaction, admiration, refinement, restlessness, justice, safety, constancy.
    • Count nounsはone, two, manyなどで量化されるが、mass termsはmuch, little, lessなどで量化される。
    • 同じ語が、mass termとして使われることもあれば、count nounとして使われることもある。例えば、(mass) It is hard as iron. (count) a hot iron.
    • 同じ語が、mass termとして使われた時と、count nounとして使われた時とで、いみを異にする場合がある。例えば、clothはmass termとしては物質の布、count nounとしてはtable clothなどの特定の布をいみする。
    • 大略同じものをいみしているのに、mass termを使って表わされることもあれば、count nounを使って表わされることもある、そのような言葉の対がある。例えば、(mass) shade, (count) shadow. しかしshades of colourの場合には、shadeはcount noun.
    • 複数形をしたmass termがある。例えば、clothes(衣服)。
    • Uncountableなはずのmass termsが数えられるものの名前にされることがある。例えば、tin, beauty. 前者はmass termとしてはスズ、count nounとしてはブリキ缶、後者はmass termとしては美、count nounとしては美人。
    • 非物質的なmass termsがcount nounとして使われると、一つの行為や性質を表わすことがある。例えば、a stupidity (= a stupid act).
    • 指示代名詞の限定用法としてthis, thatをmass termに付けることで、count nounにすることができる。例えば、This tea is better than the one we had last week.
    • Mass termを複数形とすることで、count nounにすることができる。例えば、料理のsauceをvarious sauces.


以上の特徴付けのうち、Jespersenに特有なのはmass termsに非物質的なものも含めていることである*3
