Who Was the First to Formulate the Axiom of Choice?

  • Andrea Cantini “Paradoxes and Contemporary Logic,” in: The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, First published Oct. 16, 2007

Section 3.1 Poincaré and Russell on Contradictions

For the sake of historical accuracy, we should remark that Beppo Levi, the author of the 1902 paper “Intorno alla teoria degli aggregati”[1] where the axiom of choice is first formulated as an independent principle of proof, outlined an antinomy which is essentially a variant of Berry's paradox in the context of discussing Richard's paradox (see Levi 1908)[2].

  • Andrea Cantini “Paradoxes, Self-Reference and Truth in the 20th Century,” in: Dov M. Gabbay and John Woods ed., Logic from Russell to Church, Elsevier, Handbook of the History of Logic, vol. 5, 2009

Tacitly used for years in mathematical arguments, incidentally stated and rejected by Peano (1890, p. 210), recognized as a new mathematical principle by Beppo Levi (1902, p.864), suggested to Zermelo by Erhard Schmidt, the axiom [of choice] was immediately put in the limelight by the importance of the [well-ordering] theorem that could now be proved.

  • N. Schappacher and R. Schoof “Beppo Levi and the Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves,” in: The Mathematical Intelligencer, vol. 18, no. 1, 1996

N. Bourbaki's Éléments d'histoire des mathématiques mentions Beppo Levi as one of the rare mathematicians to have recognized the Axiom of Choice as a principle used implicitly in set theory, before Zermelo formulated it.
As we shall see below, the rôle sometimes accorded to Beppo Levi in the context of set theory seems somewhat overrated.

そして Section 4 Axiom of Choice and Lebesgue's Theory of Integration

Apparently following the local Torino tradition which had been started very early by G. Peano, to criticize uncontrolled application of arbitrary choices in set theory, Beppo Levi published a criticism of Felix Bernstein’s thesis, pointing out a certain partition principle that Bernstein used [Levi 1902]. In this sense Beppo Levi belongs to the prehistory of Zermelo’s famous article [Zermelo 1904]. Moore makes it clear, however, that Beppo Levi cannot be said to have already possessed Zermelo’s Axiom of Choice. And to be sure, Beppo Levi was never ready to admit this axiom in general—see [Moore 1982, 4.7]

  • Barbara Moss “Beppo Levi and the Axiom of Choice,” in: Historia Mathematica, vol. 6, no. 1, 1979

Levi did not believe in the axiom of choice*3.

Although Levi's paper [Levi 1902] contains no reference to an axiom or principle of choice, there is some evidence that he considered and rejected such a principle […] *4
