2009年12月12日の日記にも記しましたが、Klement さんによると、上記の注文した本に掲載されている論文には質的にかなりばらつきがあるとの話です。但し、中には大変興味深い論文も入っているようです。例えばそれは
- Alasdair Urquhart “Russell on Meaning and Denotation”
で、この論文にはとても重要な資料が付いているようである。この辺りのことについて、上記の二人の評者に話を聞こう。
Next, Alasdair Urquhart offers a close textual look at the GEA [= Gray's Elegy Argument], and reaches the conclusion that it is flawed, principally due to Russell's vacillating between using the letter "C" as a schematic letter and as a metalinguistic variable for phrases. This reinforces complaints made earlier by Alonzo Church that the GEA is plagued by use/mention confusions. While Urquhart is no doubt right that Russell vacillates in his usage (and so does not live up to the standards set decades later by Tarski and Quine), he does not explore whether a reconstructed version of the argument might do better, nor how Russell might have succumbed to such straightforward blunders. In sum, Urquhart's article is uncharitable. However, Urquhart does reprint an interesting letter written by Russell in 1959 to Ronald Jager in which he downplayed the GEA in favor of other considerations for the theory of descriptions.*1
Urquhart takes the target of the GEA to be Frege’s theory of Sinn and Bedeutung. What is more he aligns himself with a very small group of writers (he cites A. Church and R. J. Butler) who “dismiss Russell’s attempted argument as completely worthless” (p. 115). In support of this view, the article includes the texts of two previously unpublished 1960 letters between Russell and Ronald Jager in which Russell is dismissive of the GEA and indicates that he never repeated the argument in later publications because it was “confused”: “I came later to think that all the stuff about denoting complexes is unnecessary and in no way essential to my argument” (p. 119).*2
Gray's Elegy Argument について、Russell 本人がコメントを残しているという。これはすごく興味深い。しかもそのコメントの内容が、どうやら否定的なもののようで、当人でもそこの論証は混乱しており、そんなに大したものではないと感じている様子である。そうなんだ、Russell は Gray's Elegy Argument を当人としてはそんなに評価していないんだ。しかし当人がそこは混乱していると言ったとしても、だからといって必ず混乱しているということになる訳ではないかもしれない。もちろん当人が混乱していると言っているのだから、混乱している可能性は非常に高いが、その論証の整合性を救出することはあるいは可能かもしれない。まぁ、どうなるかわからないけれど…。
本が手に入ったら Urquhart 論文を読んでみよう。そして覚えていたら、この日記で報告致します。
