The Fate of Moses Schönfinkel's Papers

After he left Göttingen, Schönfinkel returned to Moscow. By 1927 he was reported to be mentally ill and in a sanatorium. His later life was spent in poverty, and he died in Moscow some time in 1942. His papers were burned by his neighbors for heating.*2

  • Felice Cardone and J. Roger Hindley “Lambda-Calculus and Combinators in the 20th Century,” in Dov M. Gabbay and John Woods ed., Logic from Russell to Church, Elsevier, Handbook of the History of Logic, vol. 5, 2009

By 1927, he [Schönfinkel] was said to be mentally ill and in a sanatorium. Alexander Kuzichev in Moscow relates that Schönfinkel's later years were spent in Moscow in hardship and poverty, helped by a few friends, and he died in a hospital there in 1942 following some years of illness. After his death, wartime conditions forced his neighbours to burn his manuscripts for heating.*4
