His [M. Dummett's] well-intentioned advice could be formidable. He told me, as a 22 year-old, at the start of a series of supervisions on Frege, on whose work he was then the world expert: “I know the literature, and I’ll assume you’ve read it too: so just write new stuff for me each week.”

An Oxford Greeting
I came up to Oxford with a largely Continental background, and my first meeting with him [M. Dummett] was the best introduction to analytic philosophy; he said something like this: “You wish to study philosophy of mathematics. The subject did not really begin before Frege and his definition of natural numbers in sections 55-80 of ‘Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik.’ So read these paragraphs and come back to me in two weeks with a paper telling me what you think of it.”
