The Progenitor of Ramsey's Division of Paradoxes

些細なことを一つ記します。

2009年9月16日の日記で、入手した Priest 論文について以下のように書きました。

Russell が様々な paradoxes をひとまとめにして論じたことに対し、Ramsey がそれらの paradoxes を二つのグループに分けるべきだと主張したことはよく知られていると思います。Priest さんの論文では、Russell を擁護して Ramsey の方が間違っていると主張されています。

なお、Priest さんによると、Ramsey による件の二分割説は既に Peano によってなされていたらしいです。これは知らなかった。1906年のことのようです。Priest 論文冒頭に極々簡単に記されています。

様々な paradoxes を二つのグループに分けるという考えは、Ramsey さんより前に、Peano さんによってなされていたらしいですが、先日以下の論文の

  • Jules Richard  “The Principles of Mathematics and the Problem of Sets,” in Jean van Heijenoort ed., From Frege to Gödel: A Source Book in Mathematical Logic, 1879-1931, Harvard University Press, 1967 (First published in French in 1905)

Heijenoort さんによる解説を読んでいると、Peano さんが paradoxes を区分しているという、似たような話が語られているのに気が付く*1。Richard's Paradox で有名なこの論文は、短いので以前に読んでおり、解説も目を通していたが、内容をすっかり忘れていた。該当する部分を以下に引用しておきます*2

In his letter [= the article mentioned above] Richard himself offered a solution of the paradox [= Richard's Paradox], and this solution was soon endorsed by Poincaré (1906). Yet perhaps the most penetrating commentaries on the paradox were made by Peano (1906a) [= “Additione,” in: Revista de mathematica, vol. 8, 1906], who rejected Richard's explanation and proposed his own: “Richard's example does not belong to mathematics, but to linguistics; an element that is fundamental in the definition of 〚the diagonal number〛N cannot be defined in an exact way (according to the rules of mathematics)”.

Peano さんは様々にある paradoxes を、すべての種類に渡って列挙し、それらを二つのグループに分けているのか、それとも Richard's Paradox だけはその他の paradoxes とは違って言語学上の paradox だ、と述べているだけなのか、その辺りについては今の私にはわかりません。未調査です。


なお、この間入手した次の論文

  • Gregory Landini  “Russell's Schema, Not Priest's Inclosure,” in: History and Philosophy of Logic, vol. 30, no. 2, 2009

では、上記 Priest さんの主張に反対する論を展開しているようです。この論文はちょっと長くて難しそうなので、また読めるようになったら読みます。
