先日、Russell による次の短い書簡を三つ読みました。

どの書簡にも興味を感じる論点がいくつか含まれています。私が特に興味を引かれたのは、“On Denoting”を書いた後の1906年11月5日付けの書簡でした。気になった一節を以下に引用してみます。Russell が Meinong に宛てた書簡の一部分です。書簡は元々ドイツ語で書かれていました。それを Lackey さんが英訳されています。引用文中内の‘[ ]’は Lackey さんによります。
With regard to impossible objects, I am in no way deterred by the consequence that, according to my view, the golden mountain should be put into the same class as the round square. Accordingly I have in my article “On Denoting” used the King of France as a example. As you know, there is for me no fundamental concept of necessity: consequently I cannot distinguish between impossible and non-existent objects. Moreover, I cannot see how one can distinguish between ‘to exist’ and ‘to be existent’.
That sentences, true [as well as] false, can be formed in which impossible objects appear as grammatical subjects, of course I do not deny; but I believe that these sentences must be interpreted in the manner I have indicated in my article “On Denoting”*1.
この引用文で私が関心を持ったのは、‘Accordingly I have in my article “On Denoting” used the King of France as a example’の‘Accordingly’です。上記引用文の一番最初の文とその次の文の趣旨は、「不可能な対象について言うと、the golden mountain は the round square と同じクラスに属するのである。したがって (Accordingly)、the King of France を使ったのである」となるでしょう。正直に言うと、なぜ the golden mountain と the round square とが同じクラスに属すると、the King of France を使うことになるのか、私はちょっとよくわからないでいます。なので、この日記の項目名‘Why Did Russell Use the Phrase ‘the King of France,’ Not the Phrase ‘the Golden Mountain’?’に対しては、私自身の答えを何も持ち合わせていないでおります。しかし、Russell の専門家や頭の切れる方なら、上記の引用文から各々その答えを引き出されることでしょう。
それはそれとして、もしも Russell が、Meinongian Jungle を一掃することだけを考えていたならば、その場合、徹頭徹尾、Meinongian な the golden mountain や the round square を含んだ文章を取り上げ、それらを記述の理論にかけて、そしてこの理論によるならば、それらの文章で言及されている the golden mountain も the round square もありはしないと結論できる、と Russell はするでしょう。しかし、実際には“On Denoting”では Russell はそうしませんでした。わざわざ the golden mountain でも the round square でもない、the King of France を取り上げて、記述の理論を論じていた訳です。これは Russell が、ひたすら Meinongian Jungle を一掃することだけを考えていた、という訳ではないことを示しているように思われます。
いずれにせよ、Lackey さんが英訳された今回の Russell 書簡三通は、私にはとても興味深いものでした。
