先日出たばかりの次の本を書店店頭で拝見させていただく。
開いてみると面白そうだったので、買ってもいいかなと思いながら、ページをぱらぱらめくっていた。すると Paul Boghossian さんについて言及されている記述が見られる。私は Boghossian さんについてはよく知らない。 A priori な知識や analytic truth について、論じておられたのを知っているぐらいである。その Boghossian さんについて、上記の訳書 p. 138 にて大体次のように書かれていた(と記憶している。なにぶん今本が手元にないので記憶に頼って記しています。)
「パラダイム分析哲学」? 私は「パラダイム分析哲学」という言葉のいみを知らない。このような言葉には、今までに出会ったことはなかったと思う。多分今回生まれて初めてこのような言葉を見たと思う。分析哲学の中でも何か特殊なことをしている哲学なのだろうか。パラダイムについて考える分析哲学なのだろうか。私にはよくわからない。そういう分析哲学が最近台頭し始めているのかもしれない。しかしその一方で、もしかしてもしかすると何かの間違いではなかろうかと思った。そう思うととても不安になってきた。訳書を書棚に戻して、家に帰り、Google books を使って、原書の該当箇所を調べてみた。すると次のような文が出て来た。
Boghossian is a paradigm analytic philosopher, […]*1
恐らくですが、ここでの‘paradigm’のいみは、典型、模範、ではないでしょうか。これが形容詞的に使われて「典型的な分析哲学者」とか「模範的な分析哲学者」、または「典型的な一分析哲学者」、「模範的な一分析哲学者」と訳される方がよいのではないでしょうか。原書の内容が Thomas S. Kuhn のパラダイム論と関係があるでしょうから、その関連から連想して翻訳では「パラダイム分析哲学」と訳さているのかもしれません。
但し、実は Boghossian さんは本当にパラダイム分析哲学者なのかもしれない。だから 「ボゴシアンは、パラダイム分析哲学の専門家で、[…]」という訳は全く正しいのかもしれない。繰り返しますが、私は Boghossian さんについてよく知りませんし、分析哲学についても詳しいところまでは知らないので、そういう分析哲学は世界中どこにもなかったし、今この瞬間にもないとまでは私は断言しません。とはいえ多分ないとは思うんですけれど…。もしもそのような分析哲学がなかった場合には、版元の校正の体制に対し、深刻な疑いが生じることになると思います。杞憂であればいいのですが…。ちなみに Google で「パラダイム分析哲学」と引用符でくくって調べても何も出てきませんでした。‘paradigm analytic(al) philosophy’として調べても、ほとんど(まともなものは)出てこなかったと思います。‘paradigm analytic(al) philosopher’とすると、若干出てきましたが、いみ合いとしては、「典型的な」という感じだと思われました。パラダイム分析哲学なる特定分野の話ではないように思われました。
結局翻訳は買わずじまいに終わりそうです。以上の話で何か私が間違っていましたら、謝ります。ごめんなさい。その場合には本文を訂正致します。
