He[Hobbes] begins with a decidedly social philosophy of language, one in which community and communication play central roles. On top of this he builds a conventionalist theory of logical truth (where ‘logic’ here means the logic of his day, Aristotelian syllogistic logic); conventionalist because of the freedom that social groups have in constructing their language. What emerges is a picture of logical reasoning as a kind of arithmetic of names, and while this view has numerous difficulties to overcome there is one particular obstacle which I would like to focus on.

Hobbesが推論について、それはつまるところ計算に他ならない、というようなことを言っていたのは覚えていますが、論理的真理に関して規約説を抱いていたというのは初耳でした。そうなんですか。これは何か社会契約説と関係がありそうですね。社会契約説を採るがゆえに論理的真理に関しても規約説を採る、ということなのかな？　本当に「社会契約説、∴論理的真理の規約説」と演繹できるのか、私は知りませんが…。しかしHobbesがほんとに論理的真理に関してsuperficial/trivialでない規約説を考えていたとするならば、この規約説は論理実証主義者から、その起源をはるかに遡ることになりますね。それにしてもものすごく遡るな。もっと遡ることもありうるのか？
