これは、Colombia の先生が元々スペイン語で書かれた2001年と2010年の二つの文献を、補充して英訳したもののようです。出版社による説明文は次の通りです。
Peirce’s logic of continuity is explored from a double perspective: (i) Peirce’s original understanding of the continuum, alternative to Cantor’s analytical Real line, (ii) Peirce’s original construction of a topological logic – the existential graphs – alternative to the algebraic presentation of propositional and first-order calculi. Peirce’s general architectonics, oriented to back-and-forth hierarchical crossings between the global and the local, is reflected with great care both in the continuum and the existential graphs.

この本も、元々は何らかの論文を今回書籍化したものかもしれません。奥付けに1999年と2012年の二つの copyright が記されています。しかし、本の中には「この本は元々論文だったものを本にした」というようなことが書かれていないように見える。少なくとも私の気が付いた範囲では。出版社による本の説明文は次の通りです。
The book begins with a discussion of Benjamin Peirce’s linear associative algebra and then considers this and other early influences on the logic of [h]is son, C. S. Peirce. A discussion of the early algebraic logicians such as Boole, Jevons and De Morgan follows, culminating in a detailed analysis of C. S. Peirce’s seminal paper “Description of a Notation for the Logic of Relatives.” His further developments of the 1880s, including quantificational logic are also traced. At the end of his life, Peirce looked to his graphical logic system – the existential graphs – to provide the logic of the future.
父の Ben が息子の Charley に、どのような影響を与えたのかが、わかるのかもしれません。興味深い。

村上春樹さんの『1973年のピンボール』です。しばらく前からこの英語版が書店の棚から消えている。『風の歌を聴け』の英語版も消えている。たぶんですが、これら初期の作品は、村上さんにとって、完成度として満足のいくものではなかったようですので、重版をされなくなったのかもしれません。これは推測です。間違っていたらすみません。いずれにせよ、何となく手に入れたいと思っておりましたところ、古書店で見かけたので購入しました。
本屋さんで次の本を拝見させていただきました。
- 中山茂 『一科学史家の自伝』、作品社、2013年
これは中山先生が blog で書き綴ってこられた自伝を書籍化したものです。ところどころ読んでみて、面白くもあり、また悲しくも感じられました。悲しく感じられたのは、学内政治で痛い目に会われたようで、私たちもよく知る先生方を批判されています。(Blog では批判されている先生方の名前が initial になっていますが、本では実名になっていて、誰のことか、わかります。) 大学の中は、単純に学問上の業績だけで人事が決まるわけではないようなので、確執や軋轢が生じ、足の引っ張り合いになってしまうみたいです。私は、中山先生にも、先生が批判されている方々にも、教えを受けたことはないので、誰か特定の人の味方ということはなく、第三者的な立場にいることになります。こういう話を読むと、つらいです。誰かが悪いのでしょうが、誰が悪いにしても、嫌なことです。
